Guide 01
Safer gambling tools in practice
UK-licensed casinos must offer controls that help you set boundaries. This page explains what those tools do — without treating gambling as a way to make money.
Deposit, loss and session limits
Most UKGC-licensed accounts let you cap how much you can deposit or lose in a day, week or month. Raising a limit often includes a cooling-off delay; lowering one should take effect quickly. Session or reality-check reminders interrupt long stretches of play with a clear time summary.
If you are new, set limits on day one — before a welcome offer distracts you. The operators we compare (William Hill, Duelz, Lottoland, NYSpins, Los Vegas) all sit under UK rules that expect these controls to be findable in account settings.
Time-outs versus self-exclusion
A short time-out pauses an account for hours or days while you cool off. Self-exclusion is longer and harder to reverse. Use a time-out for a brief reset; use self-exclusion when you need a firm break from online gambling altogether.
GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP is a free national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling licensed in Great Britain. You choose a period (commonly six months, one year or five years). Once active, participating operators must block new registrations and logins that match your details.
GAMSTOP does not cover every form of gambling worldwide, and it does not delete money already in an account — you may still need to contact operators about remaining balances under their procedures. It also does not replace talking to a counsellor if you need one.
Talking to someone
GamCare provides information and support for anyone affected by gambling. GambleAware funds education and treatment pathways. The UK Gambling Commission explains consumer rights and how to check a licence.
Spin Back Room is only a comparison publisher. We cannot activate GAMSTOP for you or change an operator’s limits — those actions happen on their sites or through the organisations above.
